Doing well on this exam can go a long way in the admissions process. The exam is offered 6 days a week and can only be taken once per calendar month. Be advised, if you try to take it in Mishawaka, it’s often difficult to find open dates. If you don’t do as well as you would like, you will still have the month of August to retake it before school starts. - Talk to your mentor about what should be emphasized in your personal statement. Start coming up with draft ideas. - Talk to your mentor about your research interests and if they know where the leaders in that field are working. They will likely be much more capable at pointing you in the direction of the programs and P.I.s that are a better fit for you than any departmental website or ranking system. Also, be very careful that you use the exact same address and phone number information on your applications for the general and subject tests. If you use different information (your home address on one and your school address on the other, for example) then your scores will not be sent together and this will cause you a lot of hassle. - Develop a résumé that includes your education, awards and honors, work experience, activities and community service. Highlight your lab experience and any presentations you have done. August/September- -Register for the GRE Subject test. Many places require that you either take the Biology subject test or the Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology test. The Biology test spans all of biology, including ecology and physiology and more people take that. The Biochemistry, Cell and Molecular Biology test is harder (especially if you have not yet taken Biochemistry), but a lower score correlates with a higher percentage. The test has limited spacing and is offered in DeBartolo. Also, be very careful that you use the exact same address and phone number information on your applications for the general and subject tests. If you use different information (your home address on one and your school address on the other, for example) then your scores will not be sent together and this will cause you a lot of hassle. -Determine list of schools you want to apply to and ask for letters of recommendations; you generally need three. -Write personal statement. It’s a good idea to have a few different faculty look this over. Page 2 October- -Take GRE Subject test. -Email particular professors (even if you’re not sure you will work in their lab) from the schools you are going to apply to and tell them about your interest in their program. Often, faculty members can handpick who gets invited on visits and knowing you always helps. -Order transcripts from Office of the Registrar. You can do this on inside.nd.edu -Fill out applications for specific programs. These are mostly online. -Remind recommendation writers of deadlines. Most of these are submitted online and you can send email reminders online, too. Talking directly with professors is usually more effective. November- Complete and submit applications. Reminder - you have to send the GRE and GRE subject test scores to all the schools that you are applying to. You might want to wait until you get your GRE SUBJECT test scores since some schools don't require them and if they did poorly, lower scores might bring down the application. December/January/February/March- Hear back from and visit programs. Don’t take an interview if you’re already accepted at a school that you would attend over the one you’re considering the interview with. April 15- Make decision where you are going to attend.
