All lumber shall be pressure treated in accordance with the American Wood- Preservers Association standards, southern pine or decay resistant species, grade #2 or better. 2. All screws, nails and bolts shall be hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel. 3. All hardware (joist hangers, cast-in-place post anchors, etc.) shall be galvanized with 1.85-oz/ sf of zinc (G-185 coating) or shall be stainless steel, type 304 or better. Look for products such as “Zmax” from Simpson Strong-Tie or “Triple Zinc” from USP. 4. Decks constructed according to this handout are not approved for future hot tub installations. 5. Decks shall not be attached to house overhangs, bay windows, or chimneys. 6. Deviations from this handout and conditions, which do not meet the details shown herein, may require a plan submission. 7. Inspections: ➢ A footing, framing and final inspection is required on all decks ➢ Footing inspections are required PRIOR to the placement of concrete. ➢ Framing and final inspections may be combined if all portions of the deck framing and mechanical attachments are at least 24 inches above grade. ➢ Inspections are required by law. Failure to receive any and all inspections can result in the issuance of violations which may lead to legal proceedings. 8. It is the responsibility of the permit holder or their representative to notify Dekalb County when the stages of construction are reached that require an inspection. Inspections are scheduled using the Automated Inspection Request System number that appears on your permit. Please have your permit number available. Follow the instructions and your inspections will be scheduled for the following day between the hours of 8:00am and 3:00pm. 9. All decking material shall be composed of 2 x 6 or larger material or 5/4 (‘five- quarter”) boards. Decking may be placed from an angle perpendicular to the joist at an angle of 45 degrees to the joist. Decking must have a span length such that each board bears on a minimum of 4 joists. 10. Plastic or manufactured decking products may be substituted with an approved evaluation report from the International Code Council. The evaluation must be on the job site and available to the inspector during the inspection process. Installation and span lengths of the substituted material must be in compliance with the evaluation report and the manufacturer’s instructions. 11. Decks shall not be used or occupied until a final inspection approval. -2- Page 3 JOIST SIZE The span of a joist is measured from the centerline of bearing at one end of the joist to the centerline of bearing at the other end and does not include overhangs. Maximum joist span lengths are noted in Table 1. See Figures 1 and 2 for joist span types. beam post joist hanger (minimum span = 6'-0" with overhang) optional overhang overhang 3' maximum Joist Span existing house wall ledger board rim joist joist FIGURE 1: JOIST SPAN - DECK ATTACHED AT HOUSE post beam overhang (minimum span = 6'-0" with overhang) 3' maximum Joist Span optional overhang optional overhang beam post 3' maximum overhang rim joist rim joist joist FIGURE 2: JOIST SPAN - FREE-STANDING DECK Table 1 Maximum Joist Spans Joist Size Joist Spacing On Center Joist Span1 (does not include overhang) 2 X 6 12″ 10′ 9″ 2 X 6 16″ 9′ 9″ 2 X 6 24″ 8′ 6″ 2 X 8 12″ 14′ 2″ 2 X 8 16″ 12′ 10″ 2 X 8 24″ 11′ 2 X 10 12″ 18′ 2 X 10 16″ 16′ 1″ 2 X 10 24″ 13′ 1″ 2 X 12 12″ 21′ 9″ 2 X 12 16″ 18′ 10″ 2 X 12 24″ 15′ 5″ Spans based on 40 PSF live load, 10PSF dead load, southern yellow pine #2, normal loading duration -3- Page 4 BEAM SIZE Beam size is based upon the joist span and the tributary load it supports. Use Table 2 to determine the beam size and the spacing of the post that support the beam. Beam splices shall be placed above post locations. Beam span is the actual clear distance between posts. Larger beams than those required may be used. Use Table 4 for height limitations of wood post. All post must be secured at the top and bottom of their position placement. Dimensions of the post shall match the beam width. Properly attach beam to post (see illustrations). Brackets and hardware must be hot-dipped galvanized or stainless steel. The joists can be connected to the beams in a number of different ways. The best configuration allows the joist to bear directly on the beam, eliminating the dependency on fastener performance. Blocking should be used to stabilize the joist. -5- Unnotched post Not Allowed Solid wood beams or two 2x members with treated wood spacers Page 6 Approved by: DeKalb County Planning & Development Department -No Scale- Revision Date: January 2008 RAIL HEIGHT & PICKETT SPACING - NO SCALE - - NO SCALE - - NO SCALE - ATTACHMENT TO STRUCTURE PICKETTS SPACED LESS THAN 4” OC GUARD RAIL HEIGHT 36” MINIMUM SEE DETAIL “B” GUARD & HAND RAIL DETAILS, PICKETT SPACING. *DECK JOISTS SHALL MEET SPAN TABLES FOR 40 PSF LIVE LOAD.
